I am going to the high country tomorrow, to experience the silence, freedom, beauty, and mystery of the wilderness. Here are some thoughts before heading up.
I will be loading up the pickup tomorrow afternoon and me and my dogs Ben and Maggie are going to head west, up over the Continental Divide, to spend some time lost in a wilderness.
Its not that I don't like people, its that I find I have more to give when I spend some time alone. Solitude is something that is underrated today. We have forgotten how healing silence and wide open space can be, how necessary they are for an authentic life.
I expect the streams to be whitewater full, with the snow melt racing down from the peaks.
I hope to hear some evening birds sing, and be awake after a long night's sleep as the dawn chorus begins, when light first appears down to the east.
We plan to hike up to 10,000 feet for sure, then maybe go higher depending on where the snow level is.
Us three have done this for so many years that being up there is a relaxing and peaceful as being at home.
I plain have lived long enough to know that the fresh air, those intense blue skies, the white snow on the peaks, and the companionship of my two dogs, is just about the best this life has to offer. Up there you realize that money can only do so much for you. Time and health and love are what matters.
I know how fortunate I am to still have all three.
