With Valentine's Day approaching, consider spending with that special someone on the trail.

Valentine’s Day is coming up, which means finding the perfect way of spending it with that special someone. For the outdoorsy couple, a creative outdoor adventure is a great way of sharing each other’s love, as well as the love of the great outdoors.

Cooking a Romantic Dinner on the Trail

Bring along a romantic dinner to help celebrate the day. It doesn’t have to be fancy, perhaps the partner’s favorite backpacking dish. Or, add a twist to the meal by using some gourmet items. For instance, use gourmet cheese instead of the package found in a typical macaroni and cheese dinner. Add a creative twist with the following ideas:

  • A small bottle of wine to compliment the meal.
  • Use plastic goblets for drinks.
  • A backpacking candle or campfire to add ambiance in the evening.
  • Music with a backpacking guitar or harmonica.

Overnight Camping Trip on Valentine’s Weekend

A camping trip is more of a commitment in time, but it offers a couple the opportunity to get away from it all and focus on each other. When planning the trip, think about places that offer a scenic overlook, or a relaxing spot next to a spring or stream. Consider whether there will be other visitors to the area. If so, try to find a spot that is off the beaten path that allows some solitude.

Day-Hiking on Valentine’s Day

A day hike on Valentine’s Day is a quick way to get outdoors. Depending on how long the hike is, a couple can spend most of the day hiking, and spend the evening at a restaurant. Some trails or places to consider include:

  • A favorite trail that both enjoy going to.
  • Revisiting a trail where one proposed.
  • Visiting a new trail system to explore.
  • A trail with varying terrain and views.
  • Go night-hiking if the stars are out.
  • A winter snowshoeing trip.
  • Time the hike during a sunrise or sunset.

Give a Romantic Outdoorsy Gift

Nothing says “I love you” more than a piece of outdoor equipment. It lasts longer than flowers, and is far more useful. Some items that make thoughtful gifts:

  • A pair of liner gloves to keep the hands warm.
  • New sunglasses
  • A warm hat.
  • A colorful water bottle that is BPA-free.
  • A new pocket knife.
  • A new flashlight or headlamp.
  • Hand warmers, especially appropriate if one likes winter activities.

Of course, flowers are still a thoughtful idea. Bring along a single rose in a plastic box to protect it when in the backpack. Or, when arriving back home, have a bouquet ready that is environmentally-friendly.
