Fall is a great time for hikers and campers to enjoy the changing colors of leaves.

Fall is the time when the nights get chillier, and days shorter, and the leaves begin to change from green to beautiful shades of yellow and orange. For hikers and campers, this time of year can be one of the best times to get outside for some fall hiking and camping, and to enjoy milder temperatures and spectacular color.

Research Where the Leaves are Changing Color

Before hitting the trail, go online to research where the leaves are changing color. The U.S. Forest Service has a section on its website that is devoted to fall colors. There are links to different regions of the United States that have information on fall colors, such as the Eastern Region, Southwestern Region, and the Rocky Mountain Region. There is also a “National Forest Fall Foliage Hotspots” section that has links to prime fall color locations.

Not near a computer? Try calling the USFS’s Fall Color Hotline. The number is 1-800-354-4595.

Camera Gear for Taking Lots of Backcountry Pictures

Among the traditional items that a hiker should bring into woods, a good camera and equipment should be added to the list. A simple digital point-and-shoot camera will work for most picture-taking needs. However, bring along some extra items to help with the viewing experience. Batteries can lose a charge, especially on an overnight backpacking trip when the thermometer drops, so bring an extra set. An additional memory card will allow for more storage space.

Also, bring along a camera case to protect this expensive piece of gear from bumps in the pack or being dropped. If inclement weather is in the forecast, consider putting the camera into a resealable plastic bag or a small dry-box.

Other Things to Bring Along For Fall Picture-Taking

  • Clothing layers: Fall weather can change quickly from a warm, sunny day to cold with rain. Bring along insulating layers and sturdy rain gear.
  • Map and compass: for maintaining direction when in the field. Check with the local gear store or land manager for where the best colors are.
  • First aid kit: in case of emergencies.
  • Trekking poles: for maintaining balance and keeping stress off the legs.
  • Food and water: to stay properly hydrated and energized for a long day of fall color watching.
  • Sturdy hiking boots: ones that will provide protection from rolled ankles, and have some waterproofing for when it starts to rain.

Fall is a great time to get outside and to enjoy nature during a time of spectacular change. When checking out the fall colors, know what to bring to have fun and bring back lasting memories.
