Camping is an inexpensive, affordable way to go on an enjoyable Summer holiday. It can be incredible fun sleeping under the stars.

Camping is an ideal holiday for families, groups of friends, couples, or individuals who are simply looking to get away from it all, and have toilets, showers, washing facilities, and fresh water.

The type of campsite chosen is up to the individual. Some sites offer a field to pitch the tent with just the basic amenities, so that there is no real opportunity to spend lots of money, and if campers want anything more than playing football or relaxing in the tent / field, then there is the opportunity for a nice long walk or drive.

Other campsites offer children’s clubs, bars, restaurants, swimming pools, and entertainment. But both type of campsite can be equally as much fun as each other once the tent is pitched and the area has been investigated. For information on campsites in the UK or in Europe, contact the Camping and Caravanning Club (UK).

Many campsites offer walking and cycling trails, so that campers can get back to nature, and it is surprising how quickly children will fall asleep, even inside a sleeping bag with no central heating.

Camping at Busy Times of the Year

It is important to pre-book the campsite beforehand if planning to go camping during school holidays or at busy Summer weekends, as sites do get fully booked.

Camping Equipment

Some examples of the types of equipment that are needed for camping are: a tent, sleeping bags, roll-mats / air-beds, torch (with extra batteries), camping stove, cooking utensils, matches / a lighter, deck chairs, rubbish bags, toilet rolls, plates and cups, scissors, a bottle opener / corkscrew.

This may seem like a lot of equipment, but it may be possible to borrow some items, and if not, then bear in mind that these items are not too expensive, and they will be available to be used again for future camping holidays.

Obviously food is one of the essentials to take on a camping trip, along with the basic type of travel kit, e.g clothes, toiletries, first aid kit, sun cream, books to read, and games to play.

Always attempt to put up the tent at home at least a few days before travelling. This makes sure that all of the parts of the tent are in the bag (nothing is missing), and that you know how to put up the tent. It sounds like common-sense, but it is surprising how many people get to the campsite and cannot put the tent up. Of course it is great fun trying to get the tent packed up and back in the bag too. Hint - It never fits back into the bag properly.

It is strange, but regardless of the weather, camping holidays can still be great fun. Kids love the idea of sleeping in tents, and they always find something to do. Even when it’s raining. Just the fact that it’s a ’holiday’, seems to put everyone in a good mood, ready to enjoy themselves.

So whether the decision is to head to the countryside for long walks, head to the beach for swimming and sandcastles, or anywhere else for that matter -

Happy Camping!
