Large family camping tents are a must-have item for preserving family harmony and providing shelter. This buyer's guide can help a parent make the appropriate choice.

Family camping can be a great adventure or it can be a great aggravation. Family camping tents are perhaps the most important factors in whether an outing is fun or a failure. Large, spacious family camping tents provide shelter from the elements and also shelter from the many common family problems that arise, especially when traveling with small children or with many children. The large family camping tents detailed in this article are just a sample of the many models available, but the suggestions given for selecting a tent can apply to almost any situation or vendor.

Selecting Family Camping Tents For Large Families

The larger the family the more space will be needed. While a family camping tent might be rated to sleep six or even eight individuals it is highly unlikely that fitting that many people inside will be a pleasant experience. Everyone in the family needs to have their own reasonable amount of space, so keep these family camping tips in mind:

  • The most comfortable large family camping tents tend to be those that have dividers to create separate sleeping rooms. This is a godsend for many parents when it is time for the kids to go to bed but mom and dad want to stay up a while longer. The kids can sleep in one room, zip it shut, and while they will still be able to hear other people coming in and out it will be less distracting than trying to step over each other in the dark.
  • Will the children and parents be sleeping on the floor or in a cot? Most six person tents can only sleep three or four if cots are being used.
  • Does the tent have a covered porch area? If the sleeping areas are going to be crowded it is almost essential that shoes and boots be removed outside the tent. Many family camping tents come equipped with covered porches that give family members a place to take off dirty items before climbing into the sleeping areas of the tent.
  • How tall does the tent need to be? There is something to be said for being able to stand up comfortably inside a family camping tent. Unfortunately many tent designs do not go high enough to allow this. If head room is an issue consider staying away from dome style tents as the arching roof can be annoying for tall individuals.

Recommended Large Family Camping Tents

All of the major tent manufacturers also produce at least one large family camping tent. In brands such as Coleman look for the Coleman Max tent, a two room divided tent with room for two queen size mattresses. For those wanting an awning on the front of the tent consider the Kodiak Canvas Tent with Deluxe Awning. While it is not a multiroom tent the sturdy canvas construction and large porch area make up for it. For the ultimate in large family camping tents consider the Carter Mtn. model by Gigatent. It has two 7x10 foot sleeping areas with a 6x10 storage and sitting room in between.

The choice of what the best large family camping tent might be is a very personal decision. These tents are not only large, they are also quite heavy and bulky to move, but if comfort is important and family harmony is more important than cost, these and other large family camping tents are a must have item for any family camping trip.
